THE FEDERATION OF ASTRONOMICAL AND GEOPHYSICAL  DATA ANALYSIS SERVICES (FAGS)
of the INTERNATIONAL COUNCIL FOR SCIENCE

Introduction to FAGS

The Federation of Astronomical and Geophysical Data Analysis Services (FAGS) was formed by the International Council for Science (ICSU) in 1956 and includes today thirteen Permanent Services each operating under the authority of one or more of the intererested Scientific Unions: International Astronomical Union (IAU), International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG), and Union Radio-Scientifique Internationale (URSI). Their tasks are to continuously collect observations, information and data related to astronomy, geodesy, geophysics and allied sciences; to analyse, synthesize, and draw conclusions from them; to distribute data; and to publish the results obtained.

The current Services within FAGS are:

• 2. Bureau Gravimetrique International (BGI)
• 3. International GNSS Service (IGS)
• 4. International Center for Earth Tides (ICET)
• 5. Permanent Service for Mean Sea Level (PSMSL)
• 6. International Service of Geomagnetic Indices (ISGI)
• 7. Quarterly Bulletin of Solar Activity (QBSA)
• 8. International Space Environment Service (ISES)
• 9. World Glacier Monitoring Service (WGMS)
• 10. Centre des Donnees astronomiques de Strasbourg (CDS)
• 11. Solar Influences Data Analysis Center (SIDC)
• 12. International VLBI Service for Geodesy and Astrometry (IVS)
• 13. International Stress Map Service (WSMS)

FAGS is administered by the FAGS Council, which is composed of

• two representatives of IUGG,
• two representatives of IAU,
• two representatives of URSI,
• the Secretary of FAGS,
• the past Secretary of FAGS, restricted to a period of two years following his/her terms of office.
